Men's Lacrosse starts fast, posts 16-4 victory at Concordia Wisconsin in First Round of NCAA III Tournament

MEQUON, Wis. — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team posted a dominating 16-4 victory at Concordia Wisconsin in the First Round of the NCAA III Tournament on a chilly and overcast Wednesday afternoon on the shores of Lake Michigan.

The Basics

• Records: Ohio Northern (14-6 Overall), Concordia (19-2 Overall).
• Venue: Fitting Field - Mequon, Wis.

The Game  

• The Polar Bears took control early on, racing to a 5-0 lead with 1:27 left in the opening period.
• Sophomore Cooper Mulligan (Middletown/Bishop Fenwick) had a first half hat trick, scoring three times in the first 18:23 of the contest as ONU ran out a 10-1 advantage.
• Mulligan finished with four goals and two assists for six points.
• Northern led 5-1 after the first period, 10-2 at halftime and 12-4 after three quarters.
• Freshman Aidan Sexton (Milford) had a five-goal hat trick and an assist for six points.
• Sophomore Peyton Lich (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) had 10 saves in goal and earned the win for Ohio Northern. 
• Freshman Landon Laney (Durham, N.C./Westtown) had three points on two goals and an assist.
• Junior Jack Chaney (Westerville/South) added three assists.
• The Polar Bears out-shot the Falcons 48-40, but CUW had the ground ball advantage 35-30.
• Northern's defense forced 27 Concordia turnovers.

Notables

• Ohio Northern is ranked No. 59 in the NCAA's final NPI rankings, while Concordia is No. 33.
• This is ONU's second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. 
• The Polar Bears are now 2-1 all-time in the NCAA III Tournament.
• This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
• CUW won the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference title and is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance.
• The Falcons saw their 13-game winning streak come to an end.
• Chaney leads the Polar Bears in points this season with 57 on 26 goals and a team-best 31 assists.
• Sexton leads the team in goals this season with 30.
• Senior Alex Bergeron (Grafton, Mass.) and junior Ryan Frech (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) each have a team-high 22 caused turnovers this season. 
• Junior Devin Halliday (Delaware/Hayes) has a team-high 166 face-off wins.
• He is also 4th all-time in face-off wins with 287.
• He also leads the team in ground balls this season with 63.
• Lich ranks third all-time in ONU history with 324 saves, 25 wins, and 1881 minutes played in goal.
• Head coach Nat St.Laurent is in his 11th season at Ohio Northern with a 122-59 record, a winning percentage of .674.
