ADA — A record-setting performance by the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team paved the way for a 17-6 victory over Beloit (Wis.) on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears continue the best start to a season in program history by improving to 7-1, while the Buccaneers fall to 4-3.
Sophomore Cameron Marous (Brecksville) set an ONU single-game record with 10 points on the day, scoring four goals and tying an ONU single-game record with six assists.
His 10 points breaks the previous record of eight set by Max Weese and Steven Slagle in 2016.
He also became the first Polar Bear in program history to eclipse the 100-point mark with 101 in just 24 career games. He is also second all-time in ONU history with 60 career goals and is fourth with 41 assists.
ONU was also a perfect 25-for-25 in the faceoff circle, setting a new school record with the 1.000 winning percentage.
The trio of sophomore Chris DiMarco (Worthington), freshman Preston Victory (Brentwood, Tenn.) and junior William Peoples (Breckenridge, Colo./Summit) combined to be perfect on the day.
DiMarco and Victory were each 9-for-9 and Peoples was 7-for-7 in the game.
Northern led 5-2 early in the second quarter before scoring the game's next 11 goals, holding BC scoreless for 17:27, to take control of the match 16-2 with 6:54 left in the third.
In all, 37 different Polar Bears saw action in the game, 10 of whom scored at least one goal.
Marous and junior Noah St. Croix (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) each had hat tricks for ONU as Marous had four goals and St. Croix added three goals and two assists.
ONU out-shot BC 37-22 and won the ground ball battle 50-26.
Northern was 21-of-26 on clearing attempts and Beloit was 18-of-28.
The Polar Bears will begin Ohio Athletic Conference play on Friday with a 7 pm contest against Mount Union at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
