ADA — Team Wallace swept all seven singles matches to break a 2-2 tie and post a 9-2 victory over Team Ludwig in the Kerscher Women's Tennis Intrasquad Challenge Friday and Saturday.
Senior Katie Curry (Oxford/Talawanda) and sophomores Regan Landis (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) and Flo Sanchez (West Chester/Lakota West) all went 2-0 in singles play on Saturday to help Team Wallace.
The two teams evenly split the four doubles matches on Friday evening to enter singles play tied at 2-2.
Ohio Northern is scheduled to open its 2021 season on Feb. 5-7 at the Transylvania (Ky.) Invitational.
The teams were named in honor of past coaches that have made a positive impact on the Ohio Northern women's tennis programs.
Helen Ludwig is considered one of the developers and guardians of women's athletics at Ohio Northern University. She was critical in the formation of women's athletic teams before and during the implementation of Title IX. From 1963-84, she served as an assistant athletic director, the academic director of the Department of Physical Education and a head or assistant coach for nearly all of ONU's female athletic teams before she retired from ONU.
Sheila Wallace was the first coach of the women's tennis program, going 52-24 from 1974-82. Wallace came to Ohio Northern in 1969 as a teacher, administrator and coach. In 1991, she retired from coaching with the second best volleyball record in NCAA Division III history. She amassed 569 wins against 196 losses and led her teams through 12 consecutive seasons of 30 or more victories. In 1987 she was voted the NCAA's Division III Women's Volleyball Coach-of-the-Year.
