ADA — Freshmen had a spectacular night as the Gray team defeated the Black team 2-0 in the fourth and final match of the 2020 Polar Bear Cup women's soccer intrasquad scrimmage series on a beautiful Thursday night at Kerscher Stadium.
Freshmen Alaina Casey (Beavercreek/Carroll) and Bri Straus (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) each scored goals for the Gray squad.
Freshman Reanna Laurell (Strongsville) and junior Kristy Catrine (Springboro) combined for six saves in goal to post the shutout for Gray.
Casey scored with 4:55 left in the opening half and Straus added an insurance goal with 10:19 left in the match off an assist from fellow freshman Kylie Brown (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern Central).
The win was even more impressive as the Gray squad was made up of freshman and juniors on the team, while the Black team consisted of seniors and sophomores.
Individually, Catrine, Straus, Brown and freshman Alex Hoeffel (Continental) shared top honors with 20 points each.
The three freshman and the junior were the only players to be on the winning side in each of the four matches, scoring 12 points for the wins (3 for each) and eight more points for the eight goals their team scored in the tournament.
