No. 16 Wrestling finishes third of 20, qualifies six for nationals on final day of NCAA III Region 4 Championships

DANVILLE, Va. - The #16-ranked Ohio Northern wrestling team advanced six wrestlers into the NCAA Championships of their respective weight classes on the final day of the NCAA Division III Region 4 Championships on Saturday.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (16-7 Overall)
- Venue: Grant Center - Danville, Va.
- #16 Ohio Northern was 3rd of 20 teams 150.5 Pts.
- #6 Baldwin Wallace won the team title with 180 points, #19 Roanoke (Va.) was second with 154.5 points, Washington & Lee (Va.) was fourth with 139 points and host Averett (Va.) was fifth with 104 points.
- ONU finished ahead of #10 Ferrum (Va.) and #25 Greensboro (N.C.) in the team standings.
ONU Individuals
- Six Polar Bears posted top three finishes to earn bids to the NCAA III Championships.
- Senior Adam Myers (Springfield/STEM Academy) went 5-0 with one pin to win the weight class title at 174 pounds.
- Senior #1 ranked All-American Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) went 3-1 with two falls to finish second at 141 pounds.
- Senior #14 ranked Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.) went 4-1 with one pin to place third at 197.
- Senior Cael Vanderhorst (Covington) went 3-1 with one fall to place second at 149.
- Freshman #13 ranked Myles Johnson (Springboro) went 3-1 with one pin to place second at 285.
- Senior Teagan Hendricks (Jamestown/Greeneview) went 3-1 to place second at 165.
- Three other ONU wrestlers placed in their respective weight classes.
- Junior Ajay Locke (Lancaster) placed fourth at 184 with a 4-2 mark.
- Senior Colin Mellott (Wapakoneta) placed seventh at 125 with a 3-2 record.
- Freshman Chase Vanderhorst (Covington) went 2-2 and placed sixth at 133.
Notables
- The top 3 finishers in each weight class earned automatic bids to the NCAA III Championships March 14-15 in Providence, R.I.
- Mellott's victory in his seventh place bout put him at 25-15 this season and he finished his career with a 100-60 career record.
- Reed is 2nd all-time in ONU wrestling history in career wins with a 147-8 record.
- Reed is 31-1 on the season at 141 pounds and leads the team in pins with 18.
- Johnson is 38-4 on the season and leads the team with 15 tech falls.
- Ohio Northern head coach Ron Beaschler is in his 37th season and has a 407-264-4 dual meet record, a winning percentage of .605.
