FOSTORIA — A split squad of Ohio Northern women's golfers tied the school recod with a 318 and is in third place out of 10 after the first round of Heidelberg Fall Invitational on Friday at the Fostoria Country Club.

The Polar Bears (17-2 overall) placed four in the top 17 finishers on the 5668-yard, par-72 course.

Freshman Rhianna Firmstone (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) is one of three Ohio Northern players to post career-low rounds, as she is tied for first out of 70 golfers with a 2-over par 74 after the first 18 holes of the 36-hole tournament.

Allegheny (Pa.) is in first place with a 313, Adrian (Mich.) is second qith a 316 and Mount Saint Joseph is fourth with a 331.

ONU sat in seventh place after Friday's first round but got scores in the 70s from three golfers on Saturday to move up the standings.

Freshman Madyson Smith (Russiaville, Ind./Western) is tied for 10th with a career-low 80 and senior Karlee Staugler (Saint Henry) is tied for 13th with a career-low 81. Junior Torrie Smith (Kokomo, Ind./Western) is tied for 17th with an 83 and junior Meghan Utterdyke (Lebanon/Bishop Fenwick) is tied for 30th with an 87.

The 318 tied the school record set in April in the first round of the Otterbein Invitational.

ONU will play the final round on Saturday at 9 am, while the rest of the Polar Bear split squad will begin play in the 36-hole Bluffton Beaver Classic on Saturday at 1 pm.
