Softball pounds out 36 hits, 28 runs in two victories on Day 1 of Maryville Tournament

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Ohio Northern softball team pounded out 36 base hits and scored 28 runs and went 2-0 on the first day of the Maryville (Tenn.) Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears improve to 7-3 on the season after defeating Young Harris (Ga.) 15-3 and six innings and host Maryville (Tenn.) 13-4.
Sophomore Ashley Sujkowski went 6 for 7 with 8 RBI and five runs scored and junior All-American Kimi Blewett was 6 for 10 with 6 RBI and a home run to lead the prolific ONU offense on the day.
Junior All-American Jackie Mangola was 5 for 10 two home runs and 6 RBI and freshman Alia Brodie was 5 for 8 with five runs scored as well.
Sophomore Lauren Hurd struck out six in a complete-game 5-hitter to earn the win against YHC (11-19).
Northern batted around in both the fourth and sixth innings against Young Harris, scoring five runs in each frame, and out-hit YHC 19-5 to win the opener.
Against the host Scots (2-10), Northern both Mangola and Blewett crushed 3-run home runs late in the game to give ONU a sweep.
Leading 5-4 in the top of the sixth, Mangola's 3-run home run, her third of the season, extended the Polar Bear advantage to 8-4.
Blewett's 3-run bomb in the top of the seventh made it a 12-4 game and Mangola followed with a solo home run to cap the 5-run frame.
Freshman Katy Newman allowed only one hit over the final 3.1 innings to earn the victory.
Northern will wrap up the tournament on Sunday with a game against Maryville (Tenn.) at 10 am and a final game against YHC at Noon.
