NEW CONCORD — Junior All-Americans Jackie Mangola and Kimi Blewett led the Ohio Northern softball team to a 13-3 and 8-6 sweep of Muskingum Friday afternoon at Donna Newberry Field.
Mangola tied ONU's single-season home run record with her 13th of the year when she launched a 2-run shot in the top of the seventh inning in Game 1.
Blewett had nine RBIs on the day, including a career-high eight with a pair of home runs in the first game.
With the sweep the Polar Bears improve to 21-9 overall and 11-3 in the OAC while the Muskies fall to 12-21 overall and 5-9 in the conference.
ONU stayed atop the OAC standings with the two wins, percentage points ahead of John Carroll.
In the second game Northern raced out to an 8-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.
In the top of the first inning, freshman Christin Miller led off the game with a triple, and was drove in by sophomore Alia Brodie.
Mangola laced a single that drove in Brodie to make it 2-0.
Sophomore Meghan Anten drove in Mangola and fellow sophomore Ashley Sujkowski with her own single to give the Polar Bears a 4-0 lead.
The Polar Bears continued the scoring in the second inning, with Blewett driving in Brodie with a double.
Sujkowski doubled to left center, bringing in Blewett and Mangola, pushing the Northern lead to 7-0.
Junior Katie Cretin's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning brought in Mangola give the Polar Bears an 8-0 lead.
Muskingum battled back, scoring six runs in the final three innings to pull within 8-6, but sophomore pitcher Katy Newman held off the Muskiecomeback.
Freshman Dani Steepe earned the wins in both games to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Northern got out to a fast start in the Game 1 when Blewett launched a 3-RBI home run in the top of the first frame. and followed that up with a grand slam in the third inning to make it an 9-0 Polar Bear lead.
Mangola added her 13th home run of the season in the seventh inning with a deep shot to center field that brought in Blewett.
Her 13 home runs on the season tied the school record that she set with Blewett last season.
Northern returns to action Saturday as they host OAC rival Mt. Union at 1 pm at the ONU Softball Field.
