Men's Tennis opens spring break trip with 9-0 victory over Wartburg (Iowa)

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Ohio Northern men's tennis team kicked off its annual spring break trip with a 9-0 shutout of Wartburg (Iowa) Monday afternoon at Lake Cane Park.

With the win, the Polar Bears improve to 1-1 on the season while the Vikings fall to 2-6.

Northern began the match by sweeping all three doubles courts.

Sophomore Joey Frank and junior Nick Kowalczyk teamed up at No. 1 doubles to win 8-2 over Chris Buckingham and D.J. Grant.

At No. 2 doubles, junior Michael Kathary and sophomore Do Thai won by a 8-2 margin.

Senior Jeff Carter and junior Andrew Korba completed the sweep in doubles with an 8-2 win over Aaron Masterson and Josh Trueblood.

In singles play, Kathary and Thai both had impressive wins.

At No. 2 singles Kathary defeated Brian Rasmussen by a 6-0, 6-0 score while Thai beat Masterson by a 6-0, 6-0 score as well.

Frank picked up a tough win at No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-7(3), 10-2 win over Buckingham.

Kowalczyk was victorious by a 6-2, 6-1 score at No. 3 singles.

Carter won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles over Blayne Willadsen.

Freshman Josh Saunders was victorious by a 6-1, 6-3 score at No. 6 singles.

Ohio Northern will be in action again on Tuesday when they play Alma (Mich.) at 12 pm.
