Men's Soccer to host Red Card Cancer Game

The Ohio Northern University men's soccer team will host the Red Card Cancer Game during their 7:00 PM match on Wednesday October 14th at Kerscher Stadium. The Polar Bears join forces with the Otterbein Cardinals for the common cause of raising awareness and funds for cancer research.

Red Card Cancer was initiated in the Fall of 2009 on the campus of Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania. Paul Payne, Men's Head Coach at Bloomsburg University, started the program as a tribute to long time friend and mentor, Joe Bochicchio, Women's Head Coach at Scranton University. When Joe passed away after losing his battle with melanoma, Payne began the campaign to raise awareness about cancer in the soccer community and raise funds for research. 

The organization is supporting the investigation of how researchers may find new uses for existing medicines. The better understanding of the genetics of cancer allows for the screening of different drugs for activity in different cancers with a much higher level of sensitivity then previously available. What this means for patients is that researchers can look at thousands of FDA approved medications which may have activity in killing specific types of cancers.

Red Card Cancer donates to research that will not just benefit a specific type of cancer but is striving to fight every aspect of the disease. And the ONU men's soccer team is both excited and honored to be a part of the effort. 

The men's soccer team will be selling shirts at their home game this Wednesday in support of the Red Card Cancer organization. The shirts will be $15 dollars each. 

The team will also be accepting donations throughout the game.  Come out and be a part of the cause while cheering on your local soccer team! We hope to see a large crowd and help contribute to this charity in a significant way!
