Men's Lacrosse fights lightning, Heidelberg to win fourth consecutive game

ADA — Offense led the way for the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team to secure a 25-3 victory over Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg on a stormy and rainy Tuesday afternoon. 

The Basics

• Records: Ohio Northern (7-5 Overall, 4-0 OAC), Heidelberg (4-7 Overall, 0-4 OAC).
• Venue: Dial-Roberson Stadium - Ada, Ohio. 
• Tow lightning delays totaling one-hour and fifty-four minutes occurred in the contest.

The Game  

• Junior Jack Chaney (Westerville/South) led the Orange and Black with five points on three goals and two assists. 
• Freshman Zachary Kremser (Hudson) and Ben Gridley (New Hudson, Mich./South Lyon) each had four points for Northern.
• After a Heidelberg goal to open the first period, Grdley found the back of the net to jump-start a 6-0 run to end the first period.
• Senior J.D. Hale (West Chester/Lakota West) scored back-to-back goals to begin the second period to take an 8-1 lead.
• ONU held an 11-1 advantage going into halftime. 
• Chaney and sophomore Eli Ferguson (Springboro) both scored goals to begin the third period.
• After a Heidelberg goal, Northern went on a 3-0 run to take a 17-2 lead going into the fourth period.
• Eight different Polar Bears scored in the fourth to secure the victory. 
• The Polar Bear defense held the Student Princes scoreless for a 32:17 stretch
• Three different goalies played in the contest for Ohio Northern. 
• ONU out-shot HU 78-10 and won the ground ball battle 54-14. 

Notables

• 16 different Polar Bears found the back of the net in the contest, just two games after 17 players found the net in a win at Otterbein.
• The teams played just 9:35 before lightning delayed the game for 43 minutes with ONU leading 3-1 with 5:25 left in the first.
• The two teams played just 1:47 before a second lightning delay of 1 hour, 11 minutes occured with the home team on top 4-1.
• Chaney leads the Polar Bears in points this season with 25 on 12 goals and 13 assists.
• Hale leads the team in goals this season with 16.
• Northern leads the all-time series with Heidelberg by a 9-0 margin.
• Senior Alex Bergeron (Grafton, Mass.) is the team leader in caused turnovers this season with 13. 
• Junior Devin Halliday (Delaware/Hayes) has a team-high 93 face-off wins.
• He also leads the team in ground balls this season with 34.
• Lich ranks third all-time in ONU history with 265 saves, 20 wins, and 1548 minutes played in goal.
• Head coach Nat St.Laurent is in his 11th season at Ohio Northern with a 115-58 record, a winning percentage of .664.
