BLUFFTON — The Ohio Northern baseball team pushed its win streak to four games with an 8-2 victory at area rival Bluffton on Monday. 

The Basics

  • Records: Ohio Northern (16-7 Overall), Bluffton (7-17 Overall).

The Game 

  • Bluffton scored sinbgle runs in the first and second innings to go up 2-0, but ONU scored 8 runs unanswered runs to post the victory.
  • A combined effort on the mound saw 5 pitchers cover the 9.0 innings, only allowing 2 runs on 6 hits.
  • Freshman Carson Stevens (Wyoming) led Ohio Northern's offense, going 3-5 at the plate and scoring 2 runs. 
  • Sophomore Ace Cocklin (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) got ONU on the board with an RBI double in the third.
  • Junior Kyler Lapp (Hall, Ill.) hit an RBI double in the sixth to put ONU up 3-2.
  • Junior Evan Russ (Westfield, Ind.), freshman Tyler Rinehart (Boonville, Ind./Boonville), and sophomore Charlie Oakleaf (New Albany) each picked up an RBI in the seventh to push the lead to 7-2.
  • Senior Chase Armstrong (Lousiville, Ky./Trinity) gave Ohio Northern the early lead with a sacrifice fly.
  • Senior Robbie Reed (Goshen, Ky./Trinity) closed out the scoring in the contest with an RBI of his own in the ninth. 
  • ONU outhit Bluffton 12-6.

  • Ohio Northern leads the all-time series with Bluffton 105-41-6.
  • Stevens leads the team this season with a .371 batting average and has a team high 36 hits.
  • Armstrong is the all-time leader in home runs with 29. He is also second all-time in ONU history in walks (95), is 3rd in RBIs (133), is fifth in doubles (39) and is 8th in runs scored (126.)
  • Fifth-year senior Andrew Stechschulte (Findlay) (150), Armstrong (140), Reed (139), senior Kyler Lapp (Hall, Ill.) (131), and Evan Russ (Westfield, Ind.) (102) are all members of ONU's 100-Hit Club. 
  • Stechschulte is also tied for 8th in ONU history with 34 career doubles.
  • Ohio Northern is in its 121st season of baseball. The Polar Bears are 1511-1176-20 all-time, a winning percentage of .561.
  • 15th-year head coach Gene Stechschulte is now 323-227 at Ohio Northern for a winning percentage of .587.
