Women's Tennis defeats Edgewood (Wis.) 5-0 in First Round of NCAA III Tournament

CHICAGO, Ill. — Ohio Northern posted a 5-0 victory over Edgewood (Wis.) in the first round of the NCAA III Women's Tennis Tournament Friday afternoon at the University of Chicago's Stagg Courts.

The Polar Bears improve to 27-4, while the Eagles end their season with an 18-12 record.

Ohio Northern will now face No. 8-ranked Chicago on Saturday at 2 pm in the second round.

Northern took a 3-0 advantage by sweeping the doubles matches.

Junior Michelle Tuma and freshman Rachael Miller cruised at No. doubles, jumping to a 5-0 lead and winning 8-1.

At No. 3 doubles, junior Carly Olmstead and freshman Meghan Letizia were in control throughout the match and won 8-3.

The No. 2 doubles match was a thriller, as Northern rallied twice to win 9-7.

Sophomore Brittany Miller and freshman Taryn Stromback rallied from an early 3-1 deficit to go up 5-1, then rallied from a 7-6 deficit to win the final three games.

"I am very proud of the way we played today," ONU head coach Scott Wills said. "The weather was challenging today, but we did a good job of playing through it. The win at No. 2 doubles was a turning point in the match. I thought we were able to relax and just play after that.

"Edgewood was a good team. Any NCAA Tournament win is an accomplishment. Now we need to get ready for a top-10 opponent tomorrow."

Olmstead put Ohio Northern up 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.

Stromback wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.Tuma, freshman Christina Corbean, Letizia and Brittany Miller all ahead one set to none in their respective singles matches with the contest was ended.
