Men's Swimming & Diving handles Defiance, 247-33, to remain undefeated in 2011
ADA —The Ohio Northern University men's swimming and dive team won all but one event in a 247-33 rout of Defiance on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears are 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the OAC, while Defiance falls to 0-6 in the schools first-ever swim season.
Junior Marc Anderson led the way for the Polar Bears with two individual first place finishes and a relay team first place finish. He won the 100 breast in 1:04.63 and the 50 free in 23.89.
The underclassmen for the Polar Bears stepped up this meet, as four freshmen took first-place finishes.
Freshmen Jason Schultz, Alex Clapsaddle, Brian Heilbronner and Chris Hoffman all took a first place finish.
Schultz won the 1000 free in 10:57.77, Clapsaddle won the 50 Breast in 29.86, Heilbronner won the 50 back in 25.45, and Hoffman won the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.77.
Sophomore John Beaschler won the 100 free in 49.77, and sophomore Erik Arent won the 100 fly with a time of 57.25.
Nick Meyer swept the diving events by scoring 233.95 points in the 1-meter and 227 points in the 3-meter.
Head coach Peggy Ewald said the team "mixed up the lineup today because of our depth. Everyone got to pick an event that they wanted to compete in and it was interesting to see these athletes adjust and still succeed."
The Polar Bears don't swim again until their Winter Training in Fort Myers, Fla. The team competes again Sunday, Jan. 8 against Shippensburg (Pa.).
