PITTSBURGH (Pa.) -- Senior Abby Vargo scored her first career goal to help the Ohio Northern women's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Allegheny (Pa.) at the DoubleTree Tartan Cup on Sunday afternoon.
ONU now moves to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Gators fall to 1-3-1.
Vargo's goal put the Polar Bears on the board first at the 10:27 mark.
Senior Lauren Brown sent a corner kick to Vargo, who took a shot that bounced past the keeper into the goal.
Six minutes later, senior Sandra Thorarensen put Northern up 2-0 with her first goal of the season. Freshman Alaura Mikesell had the assist on the play.
Allegheny would get on the board in the 50th minute, but ONU responded in the 53rd minute when senior Sami Atkinson fired a shot that was stopped, but senior Sandy Plunkett was right there to control the rebound and put it in the net.
The Gators would get another goal in the 61st minute to cut the Polar Bears lead to 3-2.
But Thorarensen sent a cross that sophomore Morgan Miles headed in at the 69:10 mark to expand the ONU lead to 4-2.
Sophomore Emily Brodict (1-0-1) made two stops in goal for Northern.
The Gators had three goalies that combined for two saves on the afternoon.
The Polar Bears had a 9-7 advantage in shot and held the 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
Ohio Northern will return to action on Wednesday, when it travels to face Wittenberg at 7 pm.
