ADA — Four Ohio Northern men's indoor track and field athletes have been named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region awards list for the 2019 season, the national office announced Monday.
Senior All-American Ian McVey (Stow/Munroe Falls) and freshmen Nate Dean (Euclid/Villa Angela Saint Joseph), Luke Shellhaas (Greenville/Versailles), and Andrew Buderer (Oak Harbor) were each honored for their efforts this season.
To be recognized, a student-athlete must finish among the top-five individual or top-three relay performances in an event on their respective NCAA Division III regional performance list.
McVey garnered three All-Great Lakes Region honors after recording the top times in the one-mile, 3,000-meter, and 5,000-meter runs.
The senior claimed the top spot in the mile with a 4:11.92 performance at the annual Joe Banks Invitational inside the ONU Sports Center Fieldhouse. Meanwhile, he recorded the regional-best 3k and 5k times at Grand Valley State (Mich.) with 8:16.99 and 14.20.45 efforts, respectively.
McVey now owns 10 career All-Great Lakes Region honors in track and field.
Dean, Shellhaas, and Buderer were honored for the first time in their careers with the announcement.
Dean ended third on the All-Great Lakes Region performance list in the 400-meter dash with a :48.75 clocking adjusted for a banked-track venue.
Meanwhile, Shellhaas and Buderer were both recognized in the pole vault after each cleared a career-best 4.49 meters last weekend at the 2019 Polar Bear Final Qualifier. The freshman tandem ended in a two-way tie for the fifth-best performance in the region this season.
McVey and Dean will represent the Ohio Northern men's track and field program this weekend in the 2019 NCAA Division III Chamionships in Boston, Massachusetts to conclude the indoor season. McVey is set to compete in the 5,000-meter run while Dean will compete in the 20-man, 400-meter run field.
