ADA — The Ohio Northern women's tennis team won the Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season title outright Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 victory over OAC opponent Mount Union at University Courts.
The Polar Bears improve to 19-5 overall, 9-0 in the OAC, while the Purple Raiders fall to 8-9 overall and 5-4 in OAC play.
This is ONU's second title in the last three years and their fifth overall.
The freshmen No. 1 doubles team of Michelle Tuma and Carly Olmstead won their match 8-3 over junior Krissy Hallett and freshman Megan Czuchra to improve to 14-11 on the year and 7-1 in OAC regular season play.
No. 2 doubles was won by freshmen Emily Mueller and Lauren Rife 8-2 against sophomore Courtney Adamsky and freshman Lauren Olivier. Mueller and Rife are 22-6 on the year, including a perfect 9-0 OAC record.
The No. 3 doubles match was won 8-4 by sophomore Christie Gales and Kelsi Wurm over junior Carolann Sterkenberg and freshman Alicia Kasunic. Gales and Wurm are 18-5 overall and 8-0 in the OAC in doubles action this season.
Tuma took her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-3 over Hallet to improve to 15-13 on the year in single play.
No. 2 singles was won by Olmstead 6-4, 6-1 against Czuchra. Olmstead moved to 13-10 overall and is 7-1 in OAC regular season action.
The No. 3 singles match was won 6-3, 6-4 by Mueller over Adamsky. Mueller is now a team-best 23-5 in singles play and is 8-1 in league matches.
No. 4 singles was won by Gales 6-4, 6-4 over Olivier. Games moves to 18-9 overall and finished OAC regular season play with a 7-2 mark.
Wurm improved to 19-7 overall and 8-1 in league play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Sterkenberg.
Rife took a 6-1, 6-1 victory in No. 6 singles over Kasunic to improve to 17-9 on the year and 8-1 in league action.
The Polar Bears will return to the courts on Wednesday for the Quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament at 3:30 p.m. at home.
With a victory, ONU would advance to the OAC Tournament Final Four Friday-Saturday at the Lindner Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
