ADA — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team raised close to $900 during its second annual "Kicks for a Cause" fundraiser, hosted last weekend against Capital.
Proceeds from the effort goes to the American Cancer Society.
"Anytime we can help a cause like this is fantastic and each year we are happy to do our part," head coach Mark Batman said. "Everyone can say they have been affected by this disease in some way, whether it be through their own fight or that of a family member, friend or teammate."
The team collected donations throughout the week on campus prior to the Saturday contest versus the Crusaders and enteringgameday, had raised more than $400. The Polar Bear men's soccer team also participated in the fundraiser, showcasing their support through pink wristbands and shoelaces.
In addition to the money collection, the Polar Bears wore pink warm-up t-shirts created by two women's soccer players. Junior TaraTokar designed the shirt, which was then produced by the Polar Merchandise Company, which is headed by senior Alyssa Merrick.
The Polar Merchandise Company is the university's first student-run business that offers brand merchandise and creative solutions for sports teams, organizations, departments and the surrounding communities.
Northern, ranked No. 18 by the NSCAA and No. 21 by D3soccer.com, hosts OAC opponent Baldwin-Wallace tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. The team will also recognize its senior class prior to the contest: Merrick, defender Chelsea Chadwick, goalie Kristen DeWees, forwardKim McGowan and midfielder Christina Spinaris.
