ADA — Senior Courtney Cramer (Arcadia) poured in a career-high 21 points to the lead the No. 15-ranked Ohio Northern women's basketball team to an 88-49 victory over Case Western Reserve in the 2017-18 home-opener at the ONU Sports Center on Wednesday evening.
The Polar Bears improve to 4-1 overall, while the Spartans drop to 2-3 on the year.
Cramer led the way with a game-high 21 points, while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the 3-point line, and added a game-high five assists and three steals.
After a slow start in the first quarter, sophomore Abby Weeks (West Chester/Mount Notre Dame) drilled a 3-pointer with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter and Black hit a jumper to give ONU a 12-5 lead heading into the second quarter.
A jumper from CWR pulled the Spartans with 26-15 late in the second quarter, before Cramer nailed a 3-pointer with just under two minutes remaining to give ONU a 29-15 lead heading into the intermission.
The teams would trade buckets throughout the third quarter before two free throws from Black with 22 seconds remaining in the period gave ONU a 52-36 lead before the final period of play.
After the Spartans closed the gap to 65-43 with 6:40 remaining in the contest, Northern would rip off 15 straight points capped off by a layup from sophomore Kaitlyn Hurd (Buchtel/Nelsonville-York) to grab a commanding 80-43 lead.
From there, Northern would outscore CWR 8-6 to seal the 88-49 victory.
ONU was 35-of-71 (49.3 percent) from the field, including 8-of-20 (40.0 percent) from beyond the 3-point line, while the Spartans were 16-of-51 (31.4 percent) from the field, including 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from the 3-point line.
Northern won the rebounding battle by a 41-36 margin.
The Polar Bears return to action on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm as they open Ohio Athletic Conference play and welcome OAC-foe Capital to the ONU Sports Center.
