Six Lady Polar Bears earn Academic At-Large All-OAC

ADA — Six Ohio Northern female athletes garner Academic At-Large All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors as voted upon by the league's ten faculty representatives.

Seniors Amy Gillen (Troy), Ashley Yontz (Springfield/Shawnee) and sophomore Terri Lynn Shigle (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) earned First Team honors and sophomores Jillian Huber (Glandorf/Ottawa-Glandorf), Katherine Moore (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) and Lacey Shumate (Bucyrus/Colonel Crawford) each earned Honorable mention honors.

Gillen, a pharmacy major, finished third on the women’s golf team with an 89.5 stroke average, the lowest single-season stroke average of her career.

The Troy-native, played well in the fall, averaging 87.6 strokes in five tournaments. In the spring, Gillen played in eight events and tied her career-low with an 83 at the Mount Union Spring Inv. and the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling. She finished the season with eight top-10 finishes including her best finish of a tie for third at the Mount Union Spring Inv.

This marks the second straight season that Gillen earned Academic All-OAC honors. She also earned Honorable Mention All-OAC honors this season for the first time in her career.

Yontz earns Academic All-OAC honors for the third straight season and First Team honors for the second consecutive year as a member of the women’s tennis team.

The Springfield-native reached the 100-win mark this season after posting a 20-6 singles record and a 17-12 doubles mark. In her four years as a Polar Bear, Yontz was 76-16 in singles, 54-20 in doubles and is 130-36 overall.

She ends her career ranked second all-time at ONU with her 76 singles wins, just four shy of the 80 by Ashley Jones from 2003-06. She is eighth all-time with her 54 doubles wins and is third with her 130 overall wins.

Yontz also earned Second Team All-OAC honors this season and Honorable Mention honors last season.

Lynn Shigle is a pharmacy and biology/pre-med major as well as a member of the ONU swimming and diving and women’s golf teams.

She earned her second straight All-OAC honors in the 1-meter dive with a second place finish at the 2008 OAC Championships. Shigle won the OAC Title in the 1-meter dive as a freshman in 2007. She was also named the OAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 21.

The Irwin, Pa.-native played in seven tournaments for the women’s golf team and averaged 98.1 strokes per round. She fired a career-low 87 at the Wilmington Fall Invite.

ONU swimmers Huber, Moore and Shumate all earned Academic All-OAC honors for the first time.

Huber is an exercise physiology major and a four-time OAC Champion. She won the 200 I.M and the 100 Backstroke titles this season and the 100 Backstroke and 400 Freestyle Relay titles last season.

She also earned All-OAC honors in the 200 Backstroke, 400 Freestyle Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay at the 2008 OAC Championships, giving her eight All-OAC honors in all.

Huber owns the third-fastest 100 Backstroke and sixth-fastest 200 Backstroke times in school history.

Moore, a criminal justice major, had another outstanding year in the pool. After winning five OAC Titles as a freshman last season, she claimed three more this season and earned All-OAC honors in three other events.

She won the 100 Fly and was part of the winning 200 and 400 Medley Relays. Moore finish second in the 100 Freestyle and was a member of the runner-up 200 and 400 Freestyle Relay teams. In all, Moore has earned All-OAC honors a remarkable 12 times in her career.

Moore also was named the OAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 12 and is a member of the school record holding 200 and 400 Medley Relay teams.

Shumate, a pharmacy major, also had an standout sophomore season, winning four OAC Title to go along with the six titles she won as a freshman. She defended her titles in the 200 Backstroke, 400 I.M., and was part of the 200 and 400 Medley Relay teams that have won back-to-back titles.

She also claimed All-OAC honors by finishing second in the 200 I.M. and the 800 Freestyle Relay giving her an impressive 13 All-OAC honors for her career.

Shumate joins Moore in holding the 200 and 400 Medley Relay school records but she also owns the 50, 100 and 200 Backstroke as well as the 200 and 400 I.M. individual school records.

To be eligible for Academic All-OAC, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least her second year of participation in the sport.
